Three must-dos in 2026 for small tech recruitment agencies

A former director of STEM hiring giant SThree tells Turnover-IT UK of three ways to win at the staffing game in 2026.
As 2026 comes into focus, it won’t be just digital tools, ATS, or AI on the list of New Year’s resolutions for recruitment agencies, as helpful as those virtual assets are invariably going to be.
Need to boost your IT recruitment agency in 2026? Try my trio
In fact, there are three things that I believe small staffing agencies in the technology sector need to do to structure or accelerate their IT recruitment — in other words — to win in 2026, writes Andy Hallett, managing director of Recspand and co-founder of RecWired.
As a former commercial director of STEM staffing giant SThree, who now runs an advisory tackling the commercial and operational growing pains of agencies, and as one of three people behind a recruitment thought-leadership community, I feel pretty well-placed to share this trio, exclusively with users of Turnover-IT UK.
Here are my three things that small tech agencies should do to win at the staffing game in 2026:
1. Go niche or, if in doubt, go ‘micro-niche’
First and foremost, the only way small tech recruitment agencies can truly win the staffing game in 2026 is to sit in a niche, even a ‘micro-niche.’
Gone are the days when you can be a generalist technology recruiter and deliver across a wide range of technologies.
To compete against the big players and generalist firms offering low fees, your small digital or tech staff agency must offer something over and above.
What are the benefits for a recruitment agency of operating in a niche?
Having a niche means that all the work you do contributes to building your asset.
Each candidate you talk to who uses a specialist, niche technology can connect you to hiring managers with that same specialist, niche need. Every company that you identify using that technology could be a vital source of talent that you can use to fill future vacancies.
Rather than going in ‘cold’ to each requirement, working in a strict niche also provides you with a unique insight into what (or who) will make a good match.
Here’s the trick that will tell a good recruiter from a great recruiter in 2026
As being able to match job descriptions to CVs is no longer as arduous as it once was, the trick in 2026 will be in knowing which one candidate’s ‘soft skill’ gives them the edge. You’re looking for that strong competency that you know one individual has, which will provide the very best, unparalleled match to the client’s brief.
Here’s a handy parallel. The modern-day equivalent of knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is not putting it into a fruit salad!
2. Build a brand for tech recruitment’s Brave New World
As a staffing agency, your job is to bring two parties, who may not have ever heard of each other, together. Let me explain why a brand is the key connecting piece.
In the good old days, you could just cold-call hiring managers through a company switchboard to find your jobs, or hit them with a massive postal mailout or email blast. As for obtaining candidates, you’d just pop an advert on tech industry bible Computer Weekly, and hey presto, you’d be able to start the matching process!
Be aware — these days are very much over, and 2026 will make them feel like a further world away.
Why getting hold of hiring managers ain’t how it used to be
As 2025 draws to a close, getting hold of hiring managers has become increasingly difficult. Due to:
Call screening;
Voicemail by default, and
Increasingly sophisticated spam filters.
These three realities of drumming up business as a recruiter in 2025 have made the art of ‘cold’ outreach almost impossible as we stand at the gates of 2026. Add in the increasing noise being produced by AI-generated outreach across both voice and digital channels, and the proposition becomes even more difficult.
The challenges of sourcing sought-after tech candidates as an IT jobs agency
Similar obstacles and frustrations await agencies when seeking to source sought-after candidates. With the inboxes and LinkedIn profiles of the most digitally talented and technologically savvy being constantly peppered with outreach, how will you stand out?
The answer is to build a brand. And then, almost let such branding and identity do the standing out for you.
Recruitment agency branding goes beyond rich graphics and a slick logo
If your sights are set on a certain employer that you want as part of your small tech agency’s portfolio, be someone that hiring managers and candidates want to be associated with.
Be someone who delivers value beyond the transactional need that they might have for filling vacancies and finding digital/IT talent.
To get started on building a (niche) brand as a tech sector but tiny recruitment agency, try these three quick tips:
Write blogs, posts or articles about your niche;
Attend (and then arrange) meetups and conferences, and
Fully invest yourself and your time in their ‘space,’ so you can truly say that you ‘live and breathe’ their ecosystem.
When the time comes for the desirable employer to enlist a recruiter, you’ll have already built trust and credibility, making you the natural choice.
3. Embrace technology usage to punch above your small agency’s weight
I opened with technology, so it seems only fitting to conclude with it.
Far from technology being a threat, embracing tools and cutting-edge innovations really can make a small recruitment agency punch well above its weight.
The big buzz as 2026 prepares to open for business is still around AI (Artificial Intelligence). That said, many AI-powered applications are still at a nascent stage, and even automation tools that can actually make a real difference to efficiency are still routinely being overlooked.
Be in no doubt — recruiters right now have some great tools at their fingertips for supporting their staffing operation, notably on sourcing and outreach.
My recommended ‘must-download’ for tiny tech agencies in 2026? It has to be one of the game-changing AI notetaker apps!
Finally, tech recruitment agencies, don’t forget your data — it’s AI’s new department…
Data is very much the new oil that will power the AI revolution.
Having solid data, building in your niche, will enable you to outperform your larger rivals. Good quality data has always been important. In 2026, all data (in any form) will be ingested with AI not discriminating against the type of structure that the data has been held in. Practically, this means bringing in every relevant applicant and customer interaction into your global system of record.
Therefore, regularly review your technology stack and check that it is still fit for purpose!
